She was born and raised in Louisiana and graduated from the Atlanta High School in the year 1976. She then went on to attend the University of New Orleans where she undertook communication studies. Ellen started her career as a stand-up comedian performing in small clubs and coffee houses. In the 1980s she started her tour and was called the funniest person in America in the year 1984.
